Boom, Arm and Bucket Cylinders: Reseal, Re-Chrome the Rod, or Replace the Cylinder

A seal kit fixes a leaking cylinder only when the barrel and the rod are still true. How to measure runout and bore condition, what re-chroming involves, and when a new cylinder is the cheaper answer.

Boom, Arm and Bucket Cylinders: Reseal, Re-Chrome the Rod, or Replace the Cylinder

Most cylinder leaks are quoted as seal kits, repaired as seal kits, and then return within a season — because the seal was never the only problem. A piston rod that has lost its chrome, a barrel that has gone oval, or a rod that is bowed enough to side-load the gland will destroy a fresh seal faster than the original wore out. This guide sets out the three measurements that decide the quotation, and the honest line between a reseal and a replacement. Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. quotes cylinder parts, rods, barrels and complete cylinders daily.

Corbay is the international export brand of Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd., Guangzhou, China. Cylinders are one of the few components where we will slow a buyer down deliberately: a seal kit sold into a worn barrel is a repair that fails twice, and the second failure is always the expensive one.

Match the Symptom to the Failed Component

Oil film and dust collecting around the rod.Wiper or dust seal — or a damaged chrome finish dragging the wiper apart. If the rod is rough, changing the wiper alone is a temporary repair.
The function drifts down with the lever in neutral, no external leak.Piston seal, rod seal, or the circuit's holding and overload relief valve. Internal, so it is measured, not seen.
Leak only when the oil is hot.Thermal clearance acting on worn seals and a worn bore — the classic signature of a cylinder that needs more than a reseal.
Leak worse at one end of the stroke.Localised bore scoring at that position, not a uniformly worn seal.
Rod blistered, pitted or scored along one face.Chrome damage, usually from a failed wiper letting grit in or from contaminated oil.
Machine pulls to that side under load; rod visibly bowed.Mechanical overload. A rebuild or a replacement, not a reseal.

Three Measurements That Decide the Quotation

First, drift rate. Warm the oil to working temperature, raise the attachment, hold with the lever in neutral and time the movement. A cold machine hides wear, because viscosity is high and everything looks tighter than it is. Second, rod runout. Roll the rod on a straight edge or measure with a dial gauge; a commonly quoted field limit is around 0.5 mm per metre, with the cylinder maker's service data being the authority. Third, bore and chrome condition. If a fingernail catches on a score line in the barrel, a new seal will be cut by that same edge within hours. Those three numbers, written down, replace every opinion in the conversation.

Re-Chroming and Straightening: When It Makes Sense

A scored or pitted piston rod does not have to be a new rod. Re-chroming — stripping the old layer, dressing the steel, re-plating and grinding back to tolerance — is a well-established repair for rods whose cores are sound and straight, and it typically costs a fraction of a new rod at the same dimensional accuracy. It stops making sense when the rod is bent beyond what straightening can correct, when the chrome loss is accompanied by corrosion pitting deep into the base metal, or when the rod end or the eye has worn. The same logic applies to barrels: honing a lightly scored bore is legitimate, boring and sleeving less commonly so, and replacement the correct answer when hardness or roundness is gone. Buyers comparing a re-chromed rod against a new one should insist on the plating specification and the finished diameter — a rod is a dimensional product, and the tolerance is the product.

What We Quote Alongside the Seal Kit

A complete cylinder repair usually touches more than the seal stack. Our catalogue, for example, carries the oil seal quoted as XZ0532E / LC32W01033P1C for SK250 class machines and the arm bushing LC12B02199P1 — the bushing worth renewing during a reseal, because a loose pin boss lets the rod side-load and undoes the repair. Alongside those we quote wiper and dust seals, rod and buffer seals, piston seals with wear and backup rings, gland and end-cap O-rings, plus the rod, the barrel, the gland nut and the complete cylinder where the measurements say so. Every line carries its grade in writing, and where a reference is commonly quoted rather than fully confirmed we say so before it ships. Related detail on seal selection sits in our cylinder seal kit guide.

Preventing the Next Failure

Repeat cylinder work almost always traces to three preventable causes: contaminated oil carrying particles across the rod seal, a damaged wiper left in service after the rod was already scored, and side loading from worn pins and bushings in the linkage. Addressing the seals without addressing all three is how a machine returns to the workshop twice a season. Contamination control in particular is cheaper than any of it — the ISO cleanliness targets and sampling habits are covered in our hydraulic oil cleanliness guide, and the seal material and profile data behind a correct kit is published by makers such as NOK.

What We Need to Quote a Cylinder Repair

Send six things: the machine model and serial number; the cylinder's own part number or a photograph of its plate; the rod diameter and barrel bore if measurable; the warm drift measurement; the quantity; and the destination port. Quotations normally come back within 24 hours, with the seal kit, rod, barrel, gland and complete cylinder each on its own line, every grade declared, and photographs of the actual parts before packing. For a fleet rebuilding several cylinders, tell us which machines and we will quote the repair parts as one kit per machine class rather than part by part. Machines covering every major brand are on our hydraulic system page, and Kobelco-specific cylinder detail by model is on the Kobelco-focused site shenyuekobelco.com.

Cylinders — FAQ

Can I buy a complete cylinder instead of repairing mine?Yes, and on a late-model machine it is often the better commercial decision. On older machines a reseal or a re-chromed rod is usually the rational route. We quote both so the choice stays with the buyer.
Will a better grade of seal stop the leak for good?Only if the rod and the bore are within tolerance. Grade changes how long a seal lasts in a sound cylinder; it does not compensate for a scored bore or a bowed rod.
How do I request a quotation and how fast will I get a reply?Send the machine and cylinder details, measurements, quantities and destination port through the contact page — Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. normally replies within 24 hours with every grade on the line.

Measure, Then Decide

Two measurements and one look inside the barrel decide between a seal kit, a re-chromed rod and a new cylinder — and they take half an hour. Send them with the machine details and the team at Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. will tell you plainly which of the three you actually need, quote every grade, and photograph the parts before they ship.
