How to Read a Kobelco Excavator Serial Number

Every week, a shipment gets sent to the wrong machine because someone ordered by model name. "SK200-8" is a family, not a machine. The serial number is what tells a parts specialist which build of that family you actually own โ€” and it takes two minutes to photograph. Here is what the numbers on your machine are for.

Three Numbers, Three Jobs

A Kobelco excavator carries more than one number, and they answer different questions. Confusing them is the root of most ordering errors.

The model."SK200-8", "SK210LC-8", "SK350-8". This tells us the family โ€” a starting point, not an identification. Many parts are shared inside a family; the important ones are not.
The machine serial number. The identity card. It groups the machine into a specific production range, which controls build differences, supersessions and market-specific parts.
The engine number. On HINO-powered machines, the engine has its own number, issued independently of the machine. On fuel-system and engine internal parts, the engine number is often the more useful of the two.

For a definitive identification, the machine manufacturer's official site and the published parts book are the reference points. We are an independent parts specialist and not an authorized Kobelco dealer โ€” but we work from the same parts books, and we are happy to read yours against our catalogue.

Where to Find the Data Plate

Serial numbers are stamped in more than one place, and the plate is not always where the operator thinks it is:

Machine data plate.Usually on the front-right area of the upper structure or on the cab-side frame, riveted to the panel. This carries the model and machine serial number.
Frame stamping. In addition to the plate, the serial is normally stamped into the structure itself โ€” the authoritative one if the plate is damaged or missing.
Engine data plate. On the engine block or rocker cover. Carries the engine model (J05E-TA, J08E โ€ฆ) and engine serial number.
Component nameplates.Main hydraulic pump, travel motors, swing motors and control valves all carry their own model and serial numbers. For hydraulic problems, these plates are what we quote from.
Cab electronics.Monitor and controller units carry their own numbers โ€” photograph the label rather than the screen.

What the Serial Number Actually Settles

Serial numbers are not decorative. Three practical things depend on them:

Build variation inside one model name.A model that ran for several years will have had running changes โ€” a different controller, a revised sensor, a changed hose. The serial number range tells us which side of the change your machine sits on.
Market variation.Machines built for different regions can differ in emissions equipment, electrical specification and even filtration. Two "identical" machines from different markets are not always identical underneath.
Supersession.Numbers get replaced over the life of a machine. Knowing the serial number lets a supplier move correctly from an old number to the number that supersedes it โ€” rather than declaring a part "no longer available".

One honest note: serial number prefixes broadly group production batches and market variants, but there is no single public table that decodes every family with certainty. Anyone who claims otherwise is improvising. The reliable route is a specialist with the parts book and a catalogue, which is exactly how we check every enquiry that arrives โ€” see how we read part numbers for the companion chapter to this one.

The Five Photos That Prevent a Wrong Shipment

This is the whole system, and it takes less time than writing an email:

1 โ€” Machine data plate.Model and serial number in one frame, in focus.
2 โ€” Engine data plate. The single most useful photo for engine and fuel-system parts.
3 โ€” The part itself, fitted.Shows us position and connections, not just shape.
4 โ€” The part number stamped or printed on the old part.Even a partly worn number gives us a cross-check.
5 โ€” The connectors and ports.Where lookalike sensors and valves are separated from each other.

Send those five, and the reply is usually a confirmed part number and a price โ€” not a follow-up question. Skipping them is why enquiries go back and forth for days while a machine sits idle.

Before You Write the Model Down Again

A working habit worth borrowing from our own team: never quote a machine from memory. Walk to the machine, photograph the plate, and read the number back from the photo. Memory mixes up SK200-8 and SK210LC-8 constantly, and the machines that get the wrong part are almost always the ones ordered "from experience".

Send Us Your Plate

Send the data plate photos and what you need, and our technical team โ€” each with more than ten years on Kobelco and HINO parts โ€” will come back with the correct number, the available grades and a lead time. Identification is free; we confirm part numbers whether or not you buy.
