Excavator Travel Motors: How to Identify Yours, Test It Properly, and Decide Between Repair and Replacement

On a 20-tonne machine the two travel motors together make up one of the largest single parts values on the whole unit, and they are also among the most frequently replaced on suspicion. A machine that pulls to one side or loses travel power has at least six possible causes and only two of them live inside the motor — which means the honest first step is always a test, not an order. This guide covers how travel motors are identified, how wear is proved, and what to order when the diagnosis really does point at the assembly. Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. quotes travel motors and internal repair parts across more than 100 machine brands.

Corbay is the international export brand of Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd., Guangzhou, China. The company has supplied excavator parts since 2007, holds 3,000+ part types on the shelf and 100,000+ part numbers available to order through original supply channels, and works with more than 100 machine brands.

Identify the Motor From Its Own Nameplate

A travel motor is identified by assembly number and unit maker, not by the excavator decal. Machines that share a class can carry different motors between production runs, and rebuilt machines frequently carry a motor that was never original. Most travel motors in this class come from specialist transmission makers, among them the Nabtesco range distributed through Nabtesco and the Kawasaki hydraulic motor families, and each family has its own set of internal parts. Two references from our own catalogue illustrate the point: for the SK250-8 class we quote the travel motor assemblies commonly referenced as LQ15V00031F5 / LQ15V00020F1 and the single assembly LQ15V00020R999, while the GM85VA unit is quoted as GM85VA / LS15V00020F1 — different classes, different motors, and not interchangeable. The motor's own plate is the authority; a photograph of it is the fastest way to a correct quotation.

The Test That Proves Wear: Case Drain Flow

Case drain flow measures the oil escaping past the motor's internal clearances directly to tank. On a healthy unit it is small; as the rotary group and the clearances wear, it rises. The method is straightforward and is done hot, with the machine at working temperature, measuring both motors under the same conditions in the same session — because the number only means anything in comparison with the other side. A significant difference between the two motors identifies which one is worn and how badly. Without this reading, a travel motor diagnosis is an impression; with it, it is evidence, and it frequently changes the order from a complete assembly to a set of internal parts.

Six Causes of Travel Weakness — Only Two Are Inside the Motor

Track tension and undercarriage drag.First and free. An over-tight track, a seized idler or a worn sprocket changes rolling resistance and mimics a hydraulic fault perfectly.
Pilot pressure at both travel spools. The most common non-motor cause of one-sided weakness, and the test costs almost nothing.
Relief settings.A low relief on one side produces weakness under load while behaving normally unloaded.
The centre joint.Oil reaches the travel motors through the swivel joint, not directly from the main valve. A cross-leaking swivel gives one-sided weakness — our catalogue quotes a swivel joint centre commonly referenced as YN52F02796P1 / YN52F02330P1.
The motor's rotary group and bearings.Proved with the case drain reading, not with a feeling.
Brake or brake release circuit.A machine that will not hold on a slope with the lever in neutral is usually a brake fault, not a rotary group fault.

Repair or Replace: The Arithmetic

A travel motor can be repaired when the housing, shaft and end covers are undamaged and the wear is confined to the rotating group, bearings and seals. Internal parts — pistons and shoes, cylinder block, valve plate, swash plate, bearings, seals and the brake components — are available for the common families, and a rebuild using them costs a fraction of a complete assembly. Replacement becomes the right answer when the housing is scored, the shaft is bent, the covers or the mounting are damaged, or the travel reduction has already failed and contaminated the motor. Where the machine has been run with metal in the oil, replacing only the motor and not flushing the circuit simply re-contaminates the new unit. Our catalogue also carries the internal components of the common travel gearboxes — for example the travel motor block C2162221251701 / LC15V00023S040, the travel motor ball guide C2162420488601 / LC15V00023S042 and the travel motor swash part C2162122059801 show the level at which these units can be repaired rather than exchanged.

Grades, Core Value and Circuit Cleanliness

Complete assemblies are quoted as genuine, OEM-quality or aftermarket with the grade stated in writing, and rebuilt options are labelled as rebuilt and described. Where a core or exchange value applies to your old unit, ask before shipping it anywhere — on assemblies of this value it is usually worth the freight. One discipline matters more than any other in this category: the circuit. Flush the case drain and return lines, renew the return filter, and confirm oil cleanliness before a new or rebuilt motor goes in, or the contamination that destroyed the first one will destroy the second. The ISO cleanliness targets and sampling practice are set out in our hydraulic oil cleanliness guide.

What We Need to Quote a Travel Motor

Send six things: the machine model and serial number; a photograph of the travel motor nameplate; the assembly number if visible; whether the symptom is one-sided weakness, loss of travel power, or a holding failure on a slope; the case drain readings if you have them; and the quantity plus the destination port. Quotations normally come back within 24 hours, with the complete assembly, the rotating group, specific internal parts and the brake components each on their own line, every grade declared, and photographs of the actual unit before it is crated. If the machine can be repaired rather than re-motored, we will say so — it is the better answer for the buyer and the reason buyers come back. Kobelco SK-series travel motor identification and internal repair parts by generation are covered in depth on the Kobelco-focused site shenyuekobelco.com.

Travel Motors — FAQ

Can I fit a travel motor from another machine class?Occasionally, but never on appearance. Mounting pattern, displacement, gear ratio, brake configuration and port arrangement all have to match. We check those before quoting an alternative, and say plainly when only the original will do.
Do both travel motors have to be replaced together? No — but the case drain readings should be compared, and if both are close to their limit it is usually cheaper to do both while the machine is already down and the circuit is already flushed.
How do I request a quotation and how fast will I get a reply?Send the machine details, the motor nameplate photograph, the symptom, any readings, quantities and destination port through the contact page — Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. normally replies within 24 hours with every grade on the line.

Test First, Then Buy Once

Thirty minutes spent on track tension, pilot pressure and a hot case drain reading prevents the most expensive wrong purchase in the travel circuit. When the evidence does point at the motor, send the nameplate photograph, the machine details and the readings to the team at Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. — the correct family will be confirmed, repair will be quoted alongside replacement where it is viable, and the actual unit will be photographed before it ships.

Corbay Excavator Parts is the international export brand of Shenyue Machinery (Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd.), Guangzhou, China. Shenyue is an independent parts specialist and is not affiliated with, or an authorized dealer of, Kobelco Limited. Parts are supplied as genuine, OEM or clearly identified aftermarket items, and the grade is stated on every quotation.
