Yet seal buying is where guesswork is most common — because seals carry no obvious identity once they are out of the box, and because the material, not the shape, decides whether the part survives. The Material Decides Everything
Seal makers — NOK among the best known — publish their material ranges openly, and the differences are not subtle. Nitrile (NBR) is the standard, economical rubber for mineral oil at moderate temperatures. Fluorocarbon (FKM, often called by the Viton trade name) resists the heat of an engine bay and the chemistry of modern fuels, and it is the right answer wherever temperature is the enemy. Polyurethane (PU) takes the pressure shocks in a hydraulic cylinder as the buffer and rod seal. PTFE handles the chemical extremes and the lowest friction. A seal that is the correct size but the wrong material is still the wrong seal — which is why serious suppliers identify seals by number and location, never by a photograph alone.
Where the Numbers Are Already Written
Many seals on a machine carry real part numbers, and quoting them removes the guesswork entirely.
