Excavator Main Hydraulic Pump: Rebuild, Rebuild With a Rotating Group, or Replace the Whole Assembly

A rebuild is cheap until it is done to the wrong half of the pump. How to read pump condition, what each repair depth actually replaces, and how to compare a rebuild quote against a replacement quote line by line.

Excavator Main Hydraulic Pump: Rebuild, Rebuild With a Rotating Group, or Replace the Whole Assembly

The main hydraulic pump is the most expensive repair decision on most excavators โ€” and the one where the wrong call is paid for twice: once on the invoice, and again when the machine comes back to the workshop three months later. Yet rebuild-versus-replace is not really a price question. It is a condition question, answered by what failed, how far the damage travelled through the pump, and how much life is left in the housing and the drive around it. This guide sets out how we walk buyers through that decision for the pumps we quote every day โ€” Kawasaki K3V and K5V tandem pumps, KPM assemblies, Nabtesco and KYB units, and the equivalent pumps on Komatsu, Hitachi, Doosan and Hyundai machines. Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. quotes pump assemblies, rotating groups and single pump parts from Guangzhou daily.

Corbay is the international export brand of Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd., Guangzhou, China. The brand is less important than the discipline behind it: in this category a rebuild is only as good as the parts inside it, and rotating groups, valve plates, cylinders, regulators and seal kits have to be matched to the pump on the nameplate โ€” never to the decal on the machine.

First Identify the Pump โ€” Not the Machine

The same machine model can carry different pump variants between production runs, so "a pump for an SK200-8" is not an orderable line. The anchor is the pump nameplate: pump model, part number and serial. Kawasaki tandem pumps โ€” the family from the precision machinery business of Kawasaki Heavy Industries โ€” appear on 20-tonne class machines from several brands, and the model plate settles the family in seconds. KPM assemblies, Nabtesco units and KYB pumps appear on similar machines in different markets and generations, which is why two machines of identical model and year can need two different pumps. Reference numbers are the second anchor: a K3V112DT assembly commonly quoted as 2924610-0030, a K3V112 regulator commonly quoted as 29070821-4927 and a K3V or K5V set plate commonly quoted as 2924110-0056 are quoted daily from our hydraulic system range, each confirmed against your nameplate photo before anything ships.

Four Failure Patterns โ€” and What Each One Tells You

Slow cycle times, hot oil.Internal leakage past the valve plate and pistons converts pressure into heat. The machine still works, which is exactly why this stage is the one buyers most often postpone โ€” and the one where a rotating group rebuild still solves the problem.
Metal in the filters.Bronze or steel particles in the suction or return filter mean the pump is machining itself. At that point the whole circuit โ€” oil, cooler, filters and control valve โ€” has to be treated as contaminated, not just the pump.
A whine that grows with temperature.A cold-start whine that fades is usually normal; a whine that deepens through a shift is a pump reporting wear.
Function loss in one circuit.Loss of swing, travel or one main function often points at the regulator or a single rotating group rather than the whole pump โ€” which changes the repair depth and the cost.

Three Repair Depths โ€” What Each One Actually Replaces

Depth one is individual parts: pistons, shoes, a valve plate, a cylinder block, a regulating valve or a seal kit โ€” right for localised damage identified by a pump shop that has opened the unit. Depth two is a complete rotating group โ€” pistons, shoes, cylinder block, valve plate and shoe plate as a matched set โ€” the practical middle path on a pump whose housing and drive are sound; it restores pressure and flow without paying for housings you already own. Depth three is a complete assembly, the fast route when the housing bores, splines or regulator body are damaged, or when the machine must return to work immediately. Sealing from makers such as NOK sets the reference standard for any rebuild, and each depth is a different line on the same quotation, so the choice stays yours.

The Cost Arithmetic โ€” How to Compare Rebuild and Replace Quotes

Compare like with like.A cheap rebuild quote that excludes the rotating group, the regulator, the coupling and the oil is not comparable with a complete assembly quote. Ask every supplier to itemise.
Add the contamination cost.A rebuild on a contaminated circuit needs a flush, new oil, new filters and often a cooler clean. Buyers who skip that step pay for it in a second failure, not a first.
Weigh the hours left in the machine.A rotating group rebuild makes sense on a machine with years of work ahead; on a high-hour unit near teardown, the arithmetic often favours the honest aftermarket route.
Ask about the grade on each line.Genuine, OEM-quality and aftermarket parts can all be correct โ€” but only if you know which one is inside the pump. Our K3V and K5V pump family guide covers how the pump references are structured.

What We Need to Quote Your Pump

Send five things: the pump nameplate photo or the pump part number; the machine model and serial number; what the machine is doing wrong (and for how long); the quantity; and the destination port. Quotations normally come back within 24 hours, with the complete assembly, the rotating group and every individual part priced on separate lines in genuine, OEM-quality and aftermarket grades โ€” the grade and maker stated in writing on each line, and any unverified reference flagged as commonly quoted until the nameplate confirms it. Ask for the coupling, suction strainer and a filter kit to be quoted with the pump so the repair is complete when the box arrives.

Hydraulic Pumps โ€” FAQ

Do you supply pumps for brands other than Kobelco?Yes โ€” K3V, K5V, KPM, Nabtesco, KYB and equivalent main pumps are quoted across Komatsu, Hitachi, Doosan, Hyundai and other makes, identified from the pump nameplate or part number rather than the machine badge.
Can you tell me from photos whether a rebuild is enough?Often yes. Send pictures of the pump, the opened rotating group if it has been inspected, the regulator and the drive coupling, plus the nameplate and the symptom. We quote both depths and tell you honestly which one the evidence supports.
How do I request a quotation and how fast will I get a reply?Send the pump number or nameplate photo, machine model and serial, symptom, quantity and destination port via the contact page โ€” Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. normally replies within 24 hours with every grade and repair depth priced on the line.

Send the Nameplate Before the Pump Fails Completely

A pump that is whining today is one that will need a full assembly tomorrow โ€” and it quietly contaminates everything downstream in between. Send the nameplate photo, the symptom and the machine serial, and the team at Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. will confirm the correct pump family, quote the rebuild and the replacement side by side, and get the parts moving before the machine decides for you.

Corbay Excavator Parts is the international export brand of Shenyue Machinery (Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd.), Guangzhou, China.
