Genuine, OEM or Aftermarket: The Real Economics

Three quotes for the same part, three prices. What the price difference actually buys โ€” and when the cheapest line on the quotation becomes the most expensive.

Genuine, OEM or Aftermarket: The Real Economics

Ask three suppliers for the same hydraulic pump and you will get three prices, sometimes with a gap wider than the price of the pump itself. The gap is not always quality. Often it is grade โ€” and the buyer who does not know which grade they were quoted is the buyer who finds out later. This is an honest look at what each grade buys, from a company that sells all of them.

The Four Grades, Defined Without Marketing Language

Genuine.Original-supply parts, in original packaging, sourced through original channels. You are paying for the factory's quality control, its documentation and its traceability โ€” and, unavoidably, the brand's margin.
OEM quality.Produced by the same supply ecosystem that makes original parts, or by a manufacturer working to the same specification, without the brand packaging. Often the same part in a different box; the honest version of this is a supplier who can tell you which factory and which specification.
Aftermarket.A third-party part, sold as a third-party part. Quality varies enormously between suppliers โ€” from excellent to unusable โ€” which is why the supplier matters more than the noun.
Reconditioned.A used core rebuilt to specification, with the critical surfaces renewed. A legitimate and valuable category on expensive assemblies โ€” and a category that must always be disclosed.

The Line Nobody Puts on the Quotation: Cost Per Hour

The purchase price is the smallest part of the real number. The number that decides whether a part choice was cheap or expensive is cost per working hour, and it is built from three items:

Purchase price. The visible line on the quote.
Downtime cost. What the machine earns โ€” or costs โ€” for every day it is stopped, plus the labour to fit the part. On a production machine this usually dwarfs the part price.
Interval to next repair. How many hours until the same job comes back. A part that costs 40% less and lasts 40% as long is not cheaper; it is a subscription.

Run that arithmetic honestly and the grade question usually answers itself. A critical machine on a contract deadline: genuine or top-tier OEM, because downtime is the whole cost. An older machine doing light work with a known remaining life: aftermarket, because the interval only has to outlast the machine's role. A machine in the middle of its life: OEM quality โ€” the choice most of our customers end up making, and the reason we stock it deeply.

Where Seals and Bearings Sit in the Argument

Some parts punish cheapness harder than others. Seals, O-rings and bearings are low-cost items with disproportionate consequences: a failed seal contaminates oil, and contaminated oil destroys a pump that costs fifty times more. On these items the arithmetic almost always favours a known quality level โ€” NOK in seals and SKF in bearings are the reference names the industry works to, and we stock both.

The Fifth Category: Counterfeit

Counterfeit is not a grade. It is a third-party part sold in original-brand packaging as genuine, and it is the one category where a buyer can be cheated without knowing it. It clusters around high-volume, high-margin consumables: filters, injectors, seal kits, sensors.

Price too far below the market. If a genuine part is quoted at aftermarket money, the question answers itself.
Packaging with the wrong detail.Print quality, font weight, hologram and part-number formatting on the box are where counterfeits slip.
A supplier who will not name the grade. The most reliable warning sign there is. Anyone selling honestly will say the words.
No traceable company behind the account.A trading account is fine; an untraceable one is not.

How We Handle Grades at Shenyue

Our working rule is boring and strict: every line of every quotation from Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. is marked genuine, OEM, aftermarket or reconditioned. We hold formal distribution authorizations for five brands โ€” Garrett, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Marusan, Tongmyung and NIKURA โ€” and those supply lines are documented and verifiable. For Kobelco, HINO, Isuzu, Yanmar, Cummins and others where we are not an authorized dealer, we supply genuine parts through original channels alongside OEM-quality and clearly identified aftermarket alternatives.

We have been doing this since 2007. The business survives on repeat customers in more than 30 countries, and repeat customers are not built on a clever answer about quality โ€” they are built on a quotation that said exactly what it was selling.

A Practical Rule for Buyers

When you receive a quotation, ask three questions before you compare prices: Which grade is this? Which factory or supply channel does it come from? What happens if it fails inside six months? A supplier worth buying from answers all three without irritation. A supplier who cannot is selling something other than parts.

Corbay Excavator Parts is the international export brand of Shenyue Machinery (Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd.), Guangzhou, China. Shenyue is an independent parts specialist and is not affiliated with, or an authorized dealer of, Kobelco Limited. Parts are supplied as genuine, OEM or clearly identified aftermarket items, and the grade is stated on every quotation.
