Excavator Starter Motors and Alternators: When the Fault Is the Part and When It Is the Machine
Starter motors and alternators are among the few excavator parts that a fitter can change in an hour — which is precisely why they get replaced on suspicion rather than on evidence. The result is a category with an unusually high second-failure rate: the same slow crank returns three weeks after a new starter goes in, because the real fault was never in the starter. This guide covers how to read the symptoms, what to measure before ordering, and how to specify a unit that will fit and work first time. Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. supplies starter and charging parts for machines across more than 100 brands from its Guangzhou warehouse.
Corbay is the international export brand of Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd., Guangzhou, China. Owners of Kobelco machines can also find model-specific electrical fault walkthroughs, including the SK200-8 generation, on the Kobelco-focused site shenyuekobelco.com; the cross-brand electrical range is on our electrical and maintenance page.

Charging Faults: Alternator or Battery?
An alternator that has failed usually announces itself as a machine that will not restart after a shift, a charge warning lamp, dim work lights at low idle, or a battery that needs a boost every morning. The measurement is straightforward: with the engine running and all loads on, expect roughly 27 to 28 volts on a 24 V system and 13.5 to 14.5 volts on a 12 V system. Above that range, suspect the regulator and the risk of boiling a battery; below it, suspect the alternator or the drive belt. A battery that fails a load test while the alternator charges correctly is a battery problem, and replacing the alternator will not fix it. Regulators, rectifiers and bearings are all replaceable on many units, and for an older machine a repair kit can be a far better purchase than a complete unit. Modern charging and starting systems are engineered alongside components from suppliers such as Bosch Mobility, whose published specifications are a useful cross-check when you are confirming a replacement.
Identifiers We Need — Because Two Units That Look Alike Are Not
Starter and alternator fitment is decided by a handful of details that are invisible in a photograph of the machine: system voltage, terminal count and layout, mounting flange pattern, pinion tooth count and rotation, pulley diameter and belt profile, and whether the unit is a direct-drive or geared design. This is why we ask for the unit's own part number and a photograph of its nameplate rather than the machine model alone. From our catalogue, for example, alternators are quoted under references such as VH270402500A for J08E engines, A3TN5188RQ / VAME017614 for 6D34 applications and VA32G6800100 for D04FR engines in SK130-8 class machines — three alternators that serve very different machines and cannot be substituted casually.
Grades, Cores and What to Insist On
What We Need to Quote a Starter or Alternator
Send six things: the part number or nameplate photograph of the unit; the machine model and serial number; the system voltage; the terminal count and layout; the fault you are seeing and what has already been tested; and the quantity plus the destination port. Quotations normally come back within 24 hours with genuine, OEM-quality and clearly labelled remanufactured options on separate lines, the grade stated in writing, and photographs of the actual unit before it is packed. On a fleet, tell us how many machines of each model you run and we will quote spares by model rather than by unit.
Starter and Alternator — FAQ
Test First, Buy Second
Ten minutes with a multimeter and a load tester is the cheapest step in this category. When the diagnosis does point at the unit, send the nameplate photograph, the machine details and the voltage, and the team at Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. will confirm the correct fitment, quote every grade honestly, and show you photographs before the unit ships.
